Yoga vs. Bicycle Training for My "Yogi World Cycling Tour"

In a couple of days I will be leaving Kathmandu, Nepal to Washington, DC to pick up my bike and ride to Pennsylvania and New Jersey giving yoga classes along the way. How am I preparing for the first leg of my World Cycling Tour? Well, I am not doing much more than light yoga and wrapping up my last class at Sooriya Wellness on the 2nd of May. In fact, I'm taking in the sights and sounds of Nepal to hold on to feelings, colors and smells of the Himalayan range from Nagarkot and Dhulikhel! This is one of the pix of my cycling core training (by doing yoga poses) -- who said I have to chose between the two when the goal is one in the same!

This is on a rock on top of Dhulikhel (by the Kali Temple) and yes I was scared to fall down and split my head open!

KICKOFF: Yogi World Cycling Tour - UPDATE

Today, I symbolically start my world cycling tour to coincide with the first anniversary of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which destroyed Nepali lives, world heritage sights and setting a nation many years back. As I am grateful for Nepal and its generous people I will cycle the world with them in my heart and on my mind. My original plan for teaching yoga for donations around the world earmarked to Nepal’s reconstruction didn’t inspire much interest in the limited yoga world I’ve contacted -- many in number, small in representation. This is disappointing on more than one level; one, that yogis and yoginis seem to be detached, but not the type of detachment that is dictated in Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra, rather it’s a detachment from the Eight Limbed Yoga paths. Two, that Nepal seems to be a forgotten land although most can easily recall the highest peak of Everest and might know that the Buddha was born in Lumbini, but Nepal is never mentioned perhaps a reflection on the small size of this landlocked country sandwiched between India and China, two heavyweights.

Having said that, now for how my next few months will look. I am leaving Nepal to the U.S. on May 4th. I will teach first in Washington DC then head to Philadelphia, PA and New Jersey, then to the West Coast. That’s as far as my plans are taking me based on the invitations I’ve received and can travel to this year. A big THANK YOU to the kind hosts who have extended their generosity to me to come and visit them around the world in Iceland, South Africa, Mexico, Philippines, Brazil, Portugal, Thailand, Germany, and the Netherlands! I will coordinate the logistics and announce my itinerary to those yoga studios as it becomes available.

Soon thereafter, I will look for more stable teaching opportunities around the world with the intent of teaching no less than a month and no longer than three in any one place. This freedom will allow me to roam the world on my bicycle for the sake of teaching yoga without the confusion of money allocation to my cause. Nepal will be front and center, as I talk to people around the world about the country and its needs sharing my experience of eight months eating, socializing and living among the warmhearted Nepali people; a happy sojourn. For those of you who have donated to my cause, your money will empower, educate and expand opportunities for Nepalese in ways neither of us are capable of imagining at the moment. Stay tuned for updates on how that money is allocated!

I hope to see some of you on a yoga mat chanting Om in a unifying breath, syncing our vibration to the universe for personal grounding, balancing and awareness may our collective energy make us better humans for us and to others.

The Final Week Before Kickoff!

I'm currently in Nagarkot on top of this breathtaking mountain. They say that if you hold a candle up to the heavens, the sun will spark it aflame. There is truth to such exaggerations about this sleepy village at 7200ft above see level. I can't think of a better place to be as I get ready to kickoff my world cycling tour! I will be cycling with the Tour de Barpak from Kathmandu, Nepal at 6am on April 22nd, this Friday! The first year memorial puja for the souls of those who perished in the aftermath of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake will be held on the 24th at the epicenter in Gorkha.

The tour's official kickoff is on April 25th as I cycle from Barpark, Gorkha back to Kathmandu. I will start updating my twitter @DubVanDinawith the hashtag #DubZYoga

Quick Update - April 7!!!

Lots of great things have been happening delivering me to my April 25 Yogi’s World Cycling Tour for Nepal’s Reconstruction launch date! The campaign has raised $220 on generosity and $820 in person so far for a grand total of $1040! That’s not all, I’ve received 11 invitations in all five target continents. After launching from the epicenter of the quake in Barpark, in Nepal's Gorkha region I will fly to the States for my U.S. leg of the tour. First stop is Washington, DC. At this point I'm in discussions with two DC yoga studios. This is what happened lately:

  • A Press Conference at the Nepali National Sports Council in Kathmandu on March 28.
  • A pre-launch cycling tour in the Kathmandu valley on Saturday April 16.
  • Reaching out to yoga studios in DC to host me as a guest teacher in the period from May 17 to April 17.

Background
Dub is a roaming yogi who lived the American dream before waking up to the reality of cancer, 70-hour workweek and a mailbox overflowing with bills. After winning the battle over cancer he started untangling his life from the shackles of materialism leading him to a sojourn to the East. The mystique of the east always beckoned, Nepal didn’t disappoint with its magical Himalayas, the home of Mount Everest -- Tibet to the north and India to the south. In this birthplace of Buddha, Dub came across yoga with a heart and mind open to the possibilities -- it was just what he was looking for. Upon becoming a certified yoga teacher he created “Zen Zone Yoga” (#DubZYoga) a roaming yoga studio bringing yoga to all those who are interested in giving yoga a chance as well as practitioners.

Nepal embraced and guided Dub along a hopeful path of self-discovery delivering him to a higher awareness and a balanced existence. The opportunity to do something fulfilling with this borrowed time on earth was right before him. As he was open to receiving the knowledge and teachings of yoga, he is now eager to share and contribute. Therefore, he is embarking on a journey of giving, as he will offer the experience of yoga to those who might not otherwise get an opportunity to try it and/or those yoga enthusiasts and practitioners who are interested in helping Nepal. The donations he will receive from giving these yoga classes will be passed along to the reconstruction efforts aiming at rebuilding a ravaged Nepal struggling to rise from the ashes of the devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake of 25 April 2015.

Asia, North American, South America, Europe and Africa are five continents, which Dub will cycle through giving yoga classes starting from Nepal on the first anniversary of the earthquake. He will set up Zen Zone Yoga roaming studio in preselected cities and location as well as spontaneously in an unplanned fashion as the opportunity arises.

Dub will update his facebook.com/DubZYoga page as well as write blog updates on TheRoamingYogi.blogspot.com. His twitter @dubvandina will utilize the hashtag #DubZYoga as well. You may contact Dub in the states at his Gmail Voice # +1-202-670-5255 or on his Nepal number (while in Nepal) +977-890-333-5499 or email: dubvandina@gmail.com
